De motorische zenuwcellen in ruggenmerg, hersenstam en hersenen, die de willekeurige spieren in het hele lichaam aansturen, sterven langzaam af.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Uiteindelijk leidt deze ziekte tot de dood van de pati\u00ebnt door verlamming van de ademhalingsspieren. De aandoening is progressief van aard, dat betekent dat iemand steeds verder achteruitgaat.
