E\u00e9n keer per jaar is het World Orthoptic Day met de bedoeling om het beroep van Orthoptist onder de aandacht te brengen. World Orthoptic Day wordt georganiseerd door de IOA (International Orthoptic Association).<\/strong>
\nHet beroep van orthoptist is nog tamelijk onbekend, hoewel het zeker niet nieuw is. In 2013 heeft de Nederlandse Vereniging van Orthoptisten (NVvO) haar 55-jarig bestaan gevierd.
\nOrthoptie is de leer van het \u2018goed\u2019 of \u2018recht\u2019 zien. Het woord komt uit het Grieks: \u2018orthos\u2019: juist of recht & \u2018optica\u2019: leer van het zien.
\nDe orthoptist is een paramedicus, werkzaam binnen het vakgebied van de oogheelkunde. Naast oogartsen, optometristen en contactlensspecialisten nemen orthoptisten een eigen, zelfstandige plaats in binnen een specifiek deel van de oogzorg.
\nDe orthoptist onderzoekt het gezichtsvermogen, de samenwerking tussen beide ogen en de oogmotoriek. De orthoptist spoort afwijkingen en de gevolgen daarvan op, zoals scheelzien al of niet gepaard gaand met dubbelzien en het luie oog. De orthoptist voert niet-chirurgische behandelingen uit bij deze afwijkingen.
