Extra care after childbirth
Most women give birth around the due date, whereby mother and baby are healthy. Sometimes, however, a pregnancy involves risks. Máxima MC (MMC) specializes in supervising women with high-risk pregnancies and babies that are born prematurely or seriously ill. The presence of the High Obstetric Care (OHC) and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) means that MMC is one of ten perinatal centers in the Netherlands.
Obstetric High Care (OHC)
The Obstetric High Care is intended for pregnant women with serious complications during pregnancy. For example, high blood pressure.
Infant Unit
The Infant Unit is for newborn babies that need medium care, for example, because they are ill or born prematurely. Neonatologists, physician assistants, nursing specialists and (student) nurses work together on the care of your baby in the Infant Unit.
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is for babies who need intensive care. The NICU includes babies born prematurely (before 32 weeks), babies whose birth weight is too low, babies that have problems with their breathing, their heart or their blood pressure, or babies with congenital abnormalities. The NICU has single and double rooms where mother and child can stay together. If the mother is still a patient, the partner can also stay overnight.
At the Infant Unit and NICU you will be involved as much as possible in the care of your baby. As soon as it is possible, you may, for example, change the diaper, feed your baby or provide kangaroo care (skin-to-skin contact where the child is placed on the parent’s bare chest).
